Your resume /curriculum vitae (CV) is one of the most important steps you take in landing the job you want. Not because this is what employers use to determine who to hire ultimately but because this is usually the first impression an employer has of you. In most cases all the employer has to go on when selecting who makes the cut for an interview is your resume.
It is therefore very important for your resume to be structured to give your employee as much relevant information about you in as little space as possible.
So what are some of the points to note when creating that winning resume?
Creating a resume is like writing an article; you need to get the punch line in as early as possible. So when writing your resume get the relevant information in on the first page. This includes information such as:
major accomplishments – employers want to know what makes you different from the hundreds of other applicants
Qualifications – just list relevant qualification
Experience – do not go into details. List where you worked, dates and position
Make sure your resume is legible and tidy – use font that is legible; type your resume (the days of writing is over); and make sure your resume looks organized and clean
Contact information – always put information you can be contacted immediately on. Don’t leave numbers of someone who has to take a message and if you give an email make sure you check your messages regularly
Your resume should be tailored to the job you are applying for – so you may have multiple skills but ensure you only include the relevant information specific to the job you are applying for
Always put reference names on, and make sure you check with the references before you put their names on. It is always more reassuring when the employer can call the reference immediately on getting the resume
Your email address should reflect your professionalism – so for example, prettygirl@....com will not give the perception you are serious
Keep it simple – a resume that is more than two pages long is not necessary. Show that you can communicate everything in no more than two pages
Never include missing periods – if someone looks at your resume and sees one of two years that is not accounted for it raises a red flag
These are some tips you need in creating that winning resume. Remember that your resume is what will give you that first chance at the job, so you must ensure it is well prepared and get the necessary assistance.
